This bottle is of a type inspired by the oinochoe jugs of Ancient Greece. They were mainly made in the Eastern Mediterranean, including Syria. The mouth of the bottle is shaped like a morning glory. When the form was introduced to China, people called it a “bongsubyeong” (phoenix-head bottle) since they thought that the mouth resembled the head of a phoenix. The blue strip attached to the mouth and neck of the bottle was a popular style of decoration at the time. The blue handle reinforced with golden thread, indicates that glass was considered more precious than gold. Bottles in this form were frequently manufactured in the Sasanian Empire (Persia).
